Often touted as the best year in Hodag history, and certainly the strongest team to date, the freshman class of 1994 had matured as a team following their disappointing season in 1995. Kevin Berni Brunett, Will "the Thrill" Henry and Todd "Hungry" Eisenberg rounded out the ranks of this squad. Leadership was provided by the legendary duo of Simon MacNair and Stacey Mears. Offense was simple: let Bern, Ron, Jamin and Lupe work it. Defense was the game for the rest of the team. They went one and one with CUT in regionals and sectionals, and made short work of their opponents in our pool at nationals, including Cornell and Stanford. As the Hodags had done all year, they choked versus NC State in pool play, but still won the pool. Their semifinals game versus Santa Barbara was, in fact, the championship game of the tournament. Barbara was surprised to see the Hodags trade points with them throughout the first and second half. Jamin was an unstoppable defensive machine, getting two d's on one point alone and many others besides. At one point the game was 14-15 UCSB, Hodags receiving the pull. In the end a few turnovers late in the game and Barbara escaped 18-15. In finals they went on to blow out CUT. |
